MERMAIDS OF HARLEM
Summer 2022. When society is barely past Covid and reeling from other plagues of humanity I stumbled upon the beautiful innocence of local children celebrating a mermaid-themed birthday party in my neighborhood of 120th St., Harlem. It was a parallel universe of peace and harmony seemingly untouched by modern atrocities. Political divisiveness, racial inequality, climate change…this time in their young lives where truth of self is all that matters without the burden of reality that older generations will soon and inevitably hand-off, unresolved for their little ones to fix. No distain, no distrust. Only sprinklers and fire hydrants. No “masks or no masks?” only hands held tight together and laughter exchanged between smiling faces. *Sorting photos later, it was unintentional but perhaps subconscious foreshadowing or self-projecting that I noticed most the images I took were of stoic faces…?

SOLITARY OAK
A solitary oak in my native state of Michigan captured on a Sony A73. I overlayed the image with an illustrator drawn self-portrait to depict how I see a figment of myself quite literally rooted in my home town soil and a reminder of my personal goal to balance in harmony with every living thing.
